Marriage License

When planning your wedding in Hawaii, one of the essential steps is obtaining a marriage license. The process is relatively straightforward but requires a few key steps to ensure your marriage is legally recognized. Here’s a quick guide to help you through the process:

Step 1: Apply for your Marriage License

Visit the online system of the Department of Health in Hawaii. https://health.hawaii.gov/vitalrecords/marriage-licenses/
Click the link to apply for your marriage or civil union license and pay the $65 fee. It’s crucial to register for your marriage license in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. You will receive a LOCATOR ID number upon purchasing your marriage license. Next, schedule an appointment to obtain your marriage license.  This number will assist the Hawaiian agent in processing your marriage license.

Step 2: In-Person Appearance

Once you and your partner arrive in Hawaii, you must appear in-person before a licensed agent to receive your marriage license. The Department of Health is located at 1250 Punchbowl Street in downtown Honolulu. Ensure you have all the necessary documents  (Your state ID, drivers license or passport) with you during this visit.

Only if you have been divorced in the last 30 days do you need to present your divorce decree.

Step 3: Sign and File

Bring your license to your wedding officiant on the day of your wedding. After your ceremony verify with your officiant to ensure all details on the license are correct, sign it, and he or she will file it online with the State of Hawaii.

Following this, your marriage certificate will be processed, and you can expect to receive it in the mail in a 2-4 weeks.

For International Couples

International couples may need to obtain an apostille stamp to authenticate their marriage certificate.  https://tinyurl.com/3pw65uk9 It’s essential to check your country’s legal requirements beforehand to ensure your marriage will be recognized internationally.
